Nigeria's Captain, Sylvester Okpe, poses with the trophy at the event's opening media conference at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium in Kigali

Nigeria’s opening bowler Rasheed Abolarin has been ruled out of the Regional Final ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier billed for Rwanda from Wednesday, November 17 to Sunday, November 2021 due to a knee injury.

The Lagos Asians Cricket Club player picked up a knee injury which has ruled him out of the tournament and his position is now taken by left-arm bowler Taiwo Mohammed, who is making a return to the team.

According to National Coach and High Development Manager, Asanka Gurusinha, Abolarin’s injury is a massive blow but then we need to react swiftly and that was why my technical team and I put heads together to draft in Taiwo as a replacement. "The injury to Rasheed is devastating not only to him but the entire Yellow Greens because it affected how we intend to execute this competition. Though he was Nigeria’s opening bowler at the recently concluded Bi-lateral series against Sierra-Leone as well as an integral member of the squad we needed to act fast and that was why we brought similar replacement with requisite experience in Taiwo who was former Vice-Captain of the historic U-19 World Cup Team and also a member of the team".

Rasheed who made his senior debut on May 20, 2019, against Kenya was also a part of the historic U-19 team that qualified Nigeria for her first World Cup in South Africa 2019.
Nigeria’s Men Senior National Team, The Yellow Greens begins hostilities in the morning at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, against Tanzania, and on the same day in the afternoon they try Uganda for size at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium.

The technical crew however believes that Mohammed joining the team hours before the events kick off has little or no effect as most of the team’s alternate players have been groomed to be action-ready for situations like this.
