Edo Cricket League Goes on Christmas Break

The 2021/22 Edo State Cricket League has gone on a two-week Christmas break after last weekend’s encounters, leaving the defending Champions, Under 17 Cricket Club as league leaders after the fourth week of the new season.

The Team boasting of the core of the nation’s under-17 national team players took out perennial rivals, No-Limit Cricket Club by 11 runs on Saturday, December 18 at the Edo Boys High School, Adolor, to remain unscathed after their fifth game of the season.

They scored 110 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 20 overs in the first innings with David Abiebhode chalking the second half-century of the league in the encounter. Abiebhode returned to help demolish No-Limit in the 2nd innings, taking three wickets for 26 runs in 4 overs, to emerge the Man-of-the-Match. No-Limit limped to 99 all out in 18.5 overs.

Invictus Cricket Club also beat Integrity Force Cricket Club by 29 runs, in a match that Nigeria’s international, Isaac Oyemgba of Invictus was adjudged Man of the Match. Invictus, scoring 112 runs for a loss of 5 wickets had halted Integrity Force’s run to 83 in 15.4 overs to claim victory.

On Sunday, December 19, Elochukwu David, with 4 wickets for 2 runs in 4 overs, propelled Invictus to their second win of the weekend, leaving Crusaders Cricket Club in shreds as their innings ended inside 11 overs.

In the closing match before the Christmas break as No-limit bounced back from their loss a day before to grind out a win against Integrity Force. Bowling sensation Victor Ikpoli partnered Godbless Abilo to bag four wickets each, to leave integrity all out for 52 in 10 overs

Chairman of the Edo State Cricket Association, who also doubles the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi AKpata, said in a message during the Christmas Outreach that saw over 200 kids that Cricket provides the perfect recreation opportunity with the added benefit of also complementing their educational pursuits.

“Because of the facilities that the state has invested in, taking up the game of Cricket has given a lot of youth advantages ahead of their pairs in other parts of the country. This includes a number of Edo State players having the opportunity to acquire life skills and also getting drafted into different national teams, which is very good for their future pursuit, given the exposure that comes with it.’ He said.

The Christmas party also saw kids introduced to the game with demonstration kits and a tour of the facility at the Edo Boys High School as a way to stir their interest in the game.

Edo State Cricket Association presently hosts the biggest grassroots development campaign in all six regions of the country.
