Lagos Cricket Stakeholders Women's T20 - Beyond Expectation

October 24, 2021

More than we promised, the Lagos Cricket Stakeholders Women's T20 delivered beyond the expectations of everyone. Starting with a bang and ending in fireworks, Lagos State once again underlined her excellence when it comes to delivery of style and flair. All the matches were live-streamed on YouTube for the viewing pleasure of cricket lovers both home and abroad, there was an abundance of representatives from various print media houses, and two notable TV stations - TVC and Tiwantiwa TV were there to provide coverage.

With over 100 ladies participating, the ladies were resplendent in the colorful jerseys provided for them by the Lagos Cricket Stakeholders and the vibrant show was complemented by the presence of highly placed members of the cricketing community. Mr. Akin Denton, Chairman of the Club Cricket Committee, Lagos, alongside Ewa Henshaw, David Harper, Dipo Idowu and a few others were present to grace the tournament and consume the entertainment the ladies had to dish out.

Two action-packed days of cricket began with the women separating themselves from the girls. Ibeju Lekki dispatched Epe by 5 wickets while Lagos Island made light work of Ikeja by 10 wickets to set up a mouth-watering finale.

Ibeju won the toss and opted to bat as they posted an intimidating score of 167 for the loss of only two batters with Kafayat Olosunde blasting 64 runs off only 72 balls; with good support from veteran Hannah Ayoka, who also posted 48 off 52 deliveries - both of them finishing their innings not out. When it was time for Lagos Island to respond, however, the devastating duo of Kafayat (4 wickets) and Hannah (2 wickets) resumed the punishment and helped Ibeju to restrict their opponents to 94/8 in the allotted 20.

If you have followed cricket in Lagos for a while, you should know that the action did not end on the field of play. The efforts of the players, along with the entertainment they delivered was recognized, acknowledged, and rewarded by shields and cash prizes.

The individual awards, with the complimentary prize of ?25,000 were sponsored by the Vice President of the Lagos State Cricket Association, Mr. Charles Omoera. The South West representative on the board of the Nigerian Cricket Federation, Mr. Tayo Atoloye also donated the sum of ?20,000 to the player of the series.

One of the revelations during the tournament, a nine-year-old Precious Ogbu caught the attention of many and for her exploits, she was rewarded with a handsome scholarship from the Lagos Cricket Stakeholders. Apart from having her tuition and education for the next 1 year taken care of, she also received cash gifts on the spot from Mr. George Wiltshire, Mr. Chibuike Iteogu amongst other donors. In case you are wondering, she was outstanding in the 1st game, taking 4 Wickets and winning the player-of-the-match for Game 1 of the tournament.

The Lagos Chapter of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers in Nigeria (ACUSN) did a great job officiating the entire tournament; and the support received from parents, guardians, and games masters were heart-warming and encouraging.

The tournament climaxed in the usual Lagos style of pomp and pageantry, and one of the pride of the tournament is the attention to fine details and the constant media communication from start to finish...and for that, special thanks to all who made this happen, and this is to hope for a bigger and better outing next time.
