NCF President Donates Kits To Unilag’s NUGA Cricket Team

The University of Lagos Cricket Team got a boost to chase gold medals at the forthcoming Nigeria University Games (NUGA), on Tuesday when President of the Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, (also an Alumni), donated kits to the team.

The presentation of the kits was done at the UNILAG Cricket Oval on, March 15, 2022, and it included batting pads, batting gloves, and cricket bats.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr. Akpata who also doubles as the Chairman of Edo State Cricket Association stated that the gesture was a way of encouraging the growth of cricket in universities.

In his words, "this donation is special because it is a way of assisting my Alma Mater. Although I have also donated equipment to other cricket institutions participating in this year’s NUGA, this is special as UNILAG would be hosting the NUGA competition from Wednesday, March 16 to Sunday, March 27, 2022. This is within the promises I made at my inauguration, where I vowed to ensure the improvement of cricket facilities across the 6 geopolitical zones, recruitment of 250,000 youths nationally to play the game, not also forgetting the appointment of more Regional Development Officers across the Federation to further spread the game.

It is expected that the donation would not only spur the cricketers at my Alma Mater to prepare them adequately for NUGA but also help the UNILAG Cricket Team strike gold at the competition".

Reacting to this gesture, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research) and Chairman, Team UNILAG Participation, Professor Oluwole Familoni, FAS thanked Mr. Akpata, for facilitating the renovation of the UNILAG Cricket Pitch to International Standard. He went further to appreciate the NCF President, for being a worthy alumnus and donating the cricket equipment to boost the morale of Team UNILAG to win gold in Cricket. The Captain of the UNILAG Cricket Team, Mr. Clement Vincent Amanokhai, on behalf of the UNILAG Cricket Team, specially thanked Mr. Akpata for his unwavering support for cricket in Nigeria and his alma mater.

He expressed optimism that the gesture would motivate the players to win gold in the ODI, T20, and 6 Aside Cricket Tournaments during the 2022 NUGA Games.

Dignitaries present at the presentation ceremony include Professor Adeyemi Awopetu (Alternate Chairman Team UNILAG Participation); Dr. Gbenga Samson Ajibola (UNILAG Handball Coach); Mr. Akinwunmi Abolade (Secretary, UNILAG Local Organizing Committee); Mr. Oluwaseun Ajidagba (Secretary, Team UNILAG Participation); Mr. Gbenga Akinrinola (UNILAG Cricket Chief Coach) and Mr. Austin Areghan (Vice-Captain UNILAG Cricket Team).
