Kwibuka 2021 - Meet the Stars

From the capital of the land of a thousand hills, the amazon rose. The stage was set, the drum rolled, the actions took place, and the curtains dropped on the Kwibuka 2021 edition where we saw 5 cricketing nations battle it out for supremacy.

It was an exciting past week of cricket, and you’d agree with me that every match day picked up momentum from where it was left the day before. We saw amazing team performances as well as individual performances. Now we have seen the end of the 2021 Kwibuka, the compact 14 players Team of the Tournament was just the beginning for some of us, imagine a women’s cricket franchise with these players and how mighty a force they will be to reckon with.

Meet the stars, The Team of the Tournament:

If you followed the series, you would not be surprised by the above list of players as they all shone to be overlooked.

 

Sune Wittmann(RHB) - The Namibian opening bat, led the highest runs chart in her 6 match appearance in the tournament. In Namibia's third match of the tournament, against Botswana, Wittmann scored a match-winning 93*(60). 2 times Best Batman of the Match and Player of the Match winner is no. 1 in the team of the tournament, selected by the Rwanda Cricket Association.

Queentor Abel - The Kenyan All-rounder, was second on the highest runs chart with 2 runs shy of the leader Wittmann. 4th on the highest wicket-taker chart, 3 times Best Batman of the Match, and 2 times Player of the Match winner this outstanding performance earned Abel the Player of the series award.

Yasmeen Khan (RHB) - vice-captain of the Namibian side, the 22 years old made her statement with the bat ranked number 3 highest run-scorer in the series. The wicket-keeper batter was a key player while fielding with 3 stumpings, 4 caught behind, and 2 assisted run-outs in 6 matches. Bagged both the Player of the Match and Best Batman award during the play-off match against Nigeria

Sarah Wetoto (Right-arm off-break) - vice-captain of the Kenyan side, 3 times Player of the Match, 2 times best Bowler of the Match award winner in the concluded series is no surprise on this star list. With 2 5-for, Wetoto was the highest wicket-taker in the series with the best bowling figures of 6/16 against Namibia in the final. Contributed to 3 runouts and a catch on the outfield, Wetoto truly holds an important spot in the all-star team.

Adri van der Merwe - had a show with the bat ranking 4th as the highest run-scorer. Winner of the Best Batsman of the Match award in the match between Namibia and Rwanda scoring 29(23), 6(4s), and a strike rate of 126.09.

Margaret Ngoche (RHB) - Captain of the Kenyan side, elected captain of the team of the tournament. 2 times Best Batsman of the Match against Namibia and Rwanda respectively. Best Bowler winner against Nigeria, Ngoche stood up tall with match-winning batting performances making her the highest run-scorer for the Kenyan side in this series with 120 runs. A pair of safe hands with 4 catches in 6 matches.

Kayleen Green (Right-arm fast) - The gahanga cricket oval was more productive for the spinners than their fast-paced compatriot. This wasn’t a show stopper for Green as she made the wicket hers claiming a total of 5 wickets in 6 matches with an incredible economy rate of 3.43

Amantle Mokgotlhe - Botswana All-Rounder made this draft with her performance against Nigeria in the final round-robin match. Nigeria won the game but Mokgotlhe Best Batsman of the Match award was a highlight for the Botswana team. For the few matches played by the Botswana team, she emerged the second leading wicket-taker for their side.

Blessing Etim - She is no arguing the best performer for the Nigerian side showing prowess with bat & ball. Player of the Match winner against Botswana, was the highest wicket-taker and second-highest run-scorer for her side in the series.

Henriette Ishimwe - 3rd highest wicket-taker, leading wicket-taker & 3rd highest run-scorer for the Rwandan side all in the series. Henriette through the series had an overall outstanding performance, winning the Best Bowler of the Match against Kenya, Player of the Match, and Best Batsman of the Match against Nigeria.

Victoria Hamunyela - the 18years old off-spinner made her debut for Namibia in 2018 in the WT20I. It was the first WT20I match to be played by Namibia. In Namibia's opening match of the series, against Nigeria, Hamunyela took four wickets for eight runs and was named the Player of the Match.

There you have it, the stars of the Kwibuka 2021. This 14 players list was a selection made by the Rwanda Cricket Association after the series.

Fingers crossed, let’s see what the future holds for Female Cricket in Africa and widening the scope for Cricket as a whole in the continent.

It is important to note; the Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) announced an official 13 players Team of the Tournament but we culled our 14 players list from wikipedia Kwibuka article page last updated as of 14th of June, 2021
