Teenagers upset leaders UNIBEN in Edo League

The Under 17 Cricket Club now top the table at the end of week two at the Edo State Cricket League when they dismissed league favourites UNIBEN CC with three wickets on Sunday afternoon at the Edo College Turfs.

The match was week two in the League and easily was in favour of the University team who had opened their first game in the league with 183runs despite the two teams having equal chance to walk out of the game topping the table.

The young and promising Under 17 Cricket Club were up against an experienced and star studded UNIBEN Cricket Club who ran out their opponent at the newly constructed turf wicket just less than 24hours ago by 97runs.

UNIBEN Cricket Club (UCC) won the toss and as expected opted to bat first hoping to build on their high scoring ability. Opening batsman and Nigerian U19 international Elijah Olaleye who scored a whopping 70runs yesterday could only post 11runs of 19balls. Surprisingly the wickets fell in quick succession and Skipper Eghosa Aghedo who top scored with 40runs of 40balls helped to push his team to a score of 90runs all out in 19.3overs. Destiny Chilemanya and Oyemba Isaac took 3wickets each with an economy of 2.00 and 4.29 respectively.

In the second innings we saw that the u17 lads came out with a game plan as they built two vital partnerships that saw them upset the senior boys from UNIBEN Cricket Club (UCC) finishing the game with 91runs for the loss of 7wickets in 18.3overs thus defeating the star studded table topping UCC by 3wickets. Elijah Olaleye of UCC took 3wickets while Emmanuel Aghomon top scored for the u17 Cricket Club with 23runs off 28balls.

Captain of the u17 Cricket Club, Destiny Chilemanya who finished with bowling figures of 3wickets 6runs in 3overs (3/6/3) and batting figures of 14runs not out of 14balls grabbed the Man of The Match Award to take his team to the top of the log after week two.

Captain of the Under 17 Destiny Chilemanya said that the team approached the game with determination and were all out to tame the high scoring UNIBEN side.

“ Our win didn't reduce the fact that our opponent were a tough side, it just showed we had an edge in strategy. I am very proud of our entire team and I hope we can keep the momentum. It is still early in the league, Our eyes are on something bigger and every ball count. For us focus is key and we intend to get better ” he said.
